Success in business doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s built through experience, learning from mistakes, and surrounding yourself with the right people.
Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand what works—and what doesn’t.
As an agent, a business owner, and now a coach, I’ve helped others navigate the same challenges I faced.
And through events like MASTERMIND and the Leader conference, I’ve had the privilege of learning from some of the sharpest minds in business.
What I’ve learned is that success isn’t about working harder—it’s about working smarter.
The 10 rules for success I’m about to share with you aren’t just theories; they’re real-world lessons that have been tested, refined, proven and truly resonated with me.
They’re a blueprint for building a thriving business, creating a high-performance team, and achieving long-term success.
1. The business comes first
Your business should be your top priority.
That often means making tough decisions, focusing on long-term success over short-term comfort, and ensuring the business’s needs are met before worrying about making others feel good.
Leadership often calls for balancing strategy with, and sometimes over, sentimentality.
2. Don’t accept the mediocre
The most successful businesses aim higher than ‘good enough’.
Striving for excellence in client service, marketing, and team performance can help create a thriving business.
Setting high standards and encouraging continuous improvement keeps things moving forward.
The old saying, ‘What got you here, won’t get you there’ really is true!
3. Create a culture of high-performance, fun & community
High-performing teams flourish in environments where productivity meets positivity.
Workplaces that blend excellence with enjoyment help teams to do their best work.
A culture that rewards hard work, streamlines tedious tasks, and keeps negativity at bay can make all the difference.
4. Analyse & debrief without blame
Success isn’t about getting everything right the first time—it’s about learning and improving.
Regularly reviewing goals, targets, deadlines, sales, and project outcomes fosters growth.
When challenges arise, focusing on solutions rather than blame creates a stronger team.
5. A self-regulating team is the aim
I’ve always found that the best teams hold themselves accountable.
Encouraging team members to take ownership of their work and support each other’s growth can strengthen your business.
With clear expectations and a culture of accountability, things can run much more smoothly.
6. 1:1s are game-changers
One-on-one meetings provide an opportunity for deeper conversations, mentorship, and support.
These check-ins allow team members to feel heard, stay on track, and develop in their roles.
And remember, a check-in doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ‘checking up’ on your team.
One-on-ones can be a super effective way to build strong relationships and solve challenges before they become bigger issues.
7. Book a non-negotiable meeting with yourself each week
Taking time each week to reflect, plan, and strategise can make a huge difference to how your business runs.
Scheduling a recurring meeting with yourself to review goals and track progress helps maintain focus, while prioritising personal development and business vision can help set the foundation for long-term success.
8. Exhaustive preparation boosts team confidence
Remember the Girl Scout motto of “Be prepared”?
I’ve seen first-hand that confidence grows with preparation.
Whether it’s a sales pitch, a presentation, or a negotiation, being thoroughly prepared leads to stronger performance.
Encouraging a culture of readiness ensures your team feels confident in their work and consistently delivers great results.
9. Involve partners in your team’s vision
Success is rarely a solo effort.
Engaging partners, stakeholders, and collaborators in a shared vision leads to better outcomes.
When those outside the business understand and support its goals, it becomes easier to move forward together.
10. Need better players? Get better coaches
A business is only as strong as its people.
Developing a high-performing team starts with great leadership, mentorship, and training.
Investing in coaching, ongoing learning, and professional development helps ensure teams have the skills and mindset needed to thrive.
